Upcycling – using men’s shirts to create a new garment

Date:

VENUE: YOUTH IN ROMSEY, SOUTHAMPTON ROAD, SO51 8AF (MAP).

Time: 10am – 2pm

Cost: £35

Details:

The workshop will teach you techniques and principles to consider to help you design something unique, whilst helping to save the planet. It is hoped that by the end of the workshop you will have the confidence and transferable skills to make repurposed clothing using other garments also.

You will make a new garment using just one or several men’s shirts. Due to the huge variety of ideas that may evolve from the workshop I expect the garments may need to be finished at home.

You will need to be fairly confident with using a sewing machine.

Before the workshop:

In preparation for the workshop you will need to gather and source ideas of how you would like to repurpose the shirt(s). Once I receive your booking I will send details of how to go about this.

To Book

Please email jan.sewromsey@gmail.com or call 07753261300 to book a place and for payment details.

Payment and refund policy

A £10 deposit is required to secure each person’s place and is non-refundable should you wish to cancel. Please make full payment of £35 (£40) by Saturday 1st January (or one week before the workshop), and note it is non-refundable after this time. Failure to make full payment by this date will mean your place is offered on. However, you may transfer your booking onto another person at anytime before the workshop date. In the unlikely event there are insufficient bookings for the course to be viable I will notify you by Thursday 6th January (or 2 days prior to the workshop) and refund all course fees immediately.

Class size: 5

The workshop content and skills you will learn:

There are so many things that can be included in a workshop like this but to manage expectations we will aim to cover the following:

  • Basic principles of how to use the fabric within the shirt.
  • Suitable seams and finishing of raw edges, to include bindings and facings if necessary.
  • Support to help you realise your vision, including learning from existing garments, basic fitting
  • How to do gathering
  • How to do appliqué
  • Applying trims etc.

What to bring:

  • Men’s work shirts, please avoid bringing heavy weight fabric shirts as this will hinder our progress in the workshop. Matching thread. Trims, laces, buttons etc., existing garments for inspiration, elastic if required, fabric scraps if you’d like to do appliqué

Sewing machine if you have one – I have some to use but it makes sense to use one you are familiar with.

Sewing equipment – I bring everything we will need but you might like to bring basic sewing things you have, (see here for further suggestions).
